We only had an hour to kill before our exit.
Under normal circumstances, Iâd have complained about the single-use aspect. Since just entering the tunnel came close to turning our brains to mush, or whatever would have happened, I was more than fine with excitement and never taking the Precursor Super Express Lane again.
The short trip didnât allow for more than a rushed brainstorming session. Which, unsurprisingly, Barrick did complain about, at least until I reminded him of the perpetual danger just outside the ship. After that, he stopped with the grumbling.
Mostly.
Sunny used up some of the time to fill us in on a bit of information about the two reptilians whose offices weâd just broken into. If not for the mole we had yet to find, I wouldnât have cared. Since the evil twins seemed to hate us so much, they were worth a deeper look.
He tried to tell me their names, but I stared back blankly. âYeah⦠no. Not even going to attempt either of those. Move on to the good stuff.â
The robot rolled his eyes but did as I asked. âTheyâre orphans. The story is actually a sad one. It almost made me feel bad for them. Their home planet fell victim to a particularly nasty race who liked to test their experiments on intelligent races. Biological experiments, to be exact. Reptilian life-forms prefer warm planets and donât spread out much unless they have a good reason.â
Selina winced. âYikes. So the Chaos heads... All of their people were likely situated on this single planet, right?â
âPretty much,â replied Sunny. âThe experiment was a success, at least in terms of how well it worked. Fast-acting, highly contagious. Iâm sure even you can do that math, Riker. It turned the reptilians into cannibals but didnât turn them mindless. They tried to flee. Had the infected succeeded, the infection would have spread. That left Chaos with two problems: dealing with the perpetrators and the compromised planet.â
The holo lit up to show us a report on the event. It came with video, which wasnât necessary.
âThe organizationâs higher-ups voted unanimously to eradicate both threats as quickly and efficiently as possible. Agents were sent to hunt down the assailants, and heavy hitters from the Chaos armada were tasked with containing the experiment. Their strategy was to raze the planet. No survivors apart from the luckyâor unlucky, depending on how you view itâfew that happened to be elsewhere when the attack hit.â
He was right about it being a sad story. The two reptilians had every reason to be pissed off, and despite their open hostility toward me and mine, I did feel a little bad.
My sympathy, however, only went so far. âOkay, so itâs tragic. But this also makes them prime suspects for working against their employer.â
âAgreed,â said Barrick. âWas there anything definitive on that count?â
Sunny shook his head. âNope. If one or both of them is working against Chaos and the Anypsians, theyâve covered their tracks well.â
That annoyed me. Without undeniable proof, we had nothing. For all I knew, the evil twins were just jaded and innocent.
